It’s an irony that my first post would be on strawberries and not cherries. I really wanted to commemorate the start of this blog with a nice big cherry pie but No Frills did not carry cherries. It is a pity. But hey, look how fresh these strawberries are! They seem to glister like ruby-diamonds of sorts. I bought two little crates of them last week as fuel for exams. You know like just grab and munch on one and spit their little green tops at a corner, creating a nice grassy heap in the end, then you imagine little happy marbled cows grazing on them, that’s besides the point but…

Strawberries Facts! The Good:

Each raw strawberry contains just 2 calories!

It’s like those cat treats that you buy for your cats- JUST 2 Calories per treat. Isn’t that insane?! Hmm..wonder why my cat’s so fat…

It contains tons of phytonutrients and antioxidants that fights off free radicals, warding off cancer.

Strawberries are also uber rich in vitamin C, manganese and fibre! Top class in the fruit kingdom.

Curiously, I was researching on strawberries when I found out that the strawberry is not so berrish after all. Berries are supposed to grow from the ‘ovaries’ of a flower, whereas strawberries grow from the base of the flower. I always thought it was strange how people always used sexual terms to describe plant growth. (They actually ‘DO’ it? *raise brows*)

Strawberry Facts! The Bad:

It’s one of the highest carriers of pesticide and according to WHFoods, even a little of these nasties can interfere with cell function, so best to go organic when it comes to SBs. Which is not great for me on a poor student budget. :(

Oxalates in strawberries are rather concentrate. Oxalates tend to crystalize and may harm to people with weak kidney and gallbladders.

Goitrogens in strawberries can also interfere with thyroid gland function.

But then again, you must probably have to eat a whole lot of SBs before you see such effects.
